Possibly the oldest cut style for gemstones, the cabocohon is ideally suited for opaque or semi-transparent stones. It takes the form of a convex curved top with (usually) a flat bottom.
It is also used for cutting asteriated stones such as star sapphire
and chatoyant stones such as cat's eye chrysoberyl
