Kyauk-sin (Rock Elephant), Kyatpyin North, Mogok Township, Pyin-Oo-Lwin District, Mandalay Region, Myanmar

The area is characterized by karst topography. Pink-purplish spinels and rubies are found in different types of marble. Sapphire, moonstone associated with nepheline, taaffeite, jeremejevite, poudretteite, chrysoberyl and other gems are recovered from the skarns and contact zones. In the alluvium rubies and sapphires are often found together with quartz, schorl, topaz and others. Alexandrite and orange-pink (padparadsha-type) sapphires are also reported. Dependent on the season and type of deposit, gem mining takes place using open-pit, letkya-dwin, inbyae, lebin and myaw-dwin methods.
